A new 12-unit apartment complex is being proposed on Furnace Street in Kingston. The plan, submitted by Joseph Herzig and 73 Furnace St. LLC, calls for replacing a deteriorated mixed-use structure with a modern building. The proposal emphasizes the need for accessible housing, with four ground-floor units designed to be wheelchair accessible.

The developers aim to complete the project by spring 2027, pending necessary approvals from the city’s Planning Board and permits from the Building Department. A public meeting to discuss the proposal is scheduled for Monday, April 20, at 6 p.m. at City Hall.

The project narrative highlights the suitability of the site for infill housing, noting that the area can accommodate the additional units without overcrowding. The developers also plan to provide at least 10% usable outdoor space and a landscaped front setback to enhance the streetscape.

Parking considerations include utilizing underused on-street parking on Furnace Street and potentially clearing title uncertainties for an alleyway to access a paved area for four vehicles and a handicap loading zone.

This development aligns with the city’s broader efforts to improve housing and infrastructure. On the same day, a public hearing will be held at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall to discuss the 2026 Annual Action Plan for the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program. The plan outlines the allocation of $747,340 in grant funds, with significant portions earmarked for public facilities and infrastructure.
