A Newburgh man, Lester Chavez, 27, has been arrested and charged with third-degree assault and felony criminal mischief following an alleged incident involving a two-year-old girl. The Orange County District Attorney's Office reports that the incident occurred on Sunday (April 12) at a residence on Washington Street in Newburgh, New York.
Emergency Medical Services transported the injured child to St. Luke’s Hospital. While the extent of her injuries has not been disclosed, officials note that the assault charge typically applies to cases involving injuries such as bruising or minor lacerations. The investigation is still in its early stages, and no medical records have been received yet.
Chavez was released from custody since the charges against him are not eligible for bail. He has been ordered to stay away from the child and her mother. Chavez is scheduled to appear in court again on April 21.
