In Newburgh, Councilwoman Ramona Monteverde is advocating for the addition of bike lanes as part of the city's push for smart urban design. While the city is currently focused on affordable housing and economic development, Monteverde believes that integrating bike lanes could enhance the city's infrastructure.

The idea is inspired by nearby Kingston, which successfully incorporated bike lanes into its main thoroughfare redevelopment. Monteverde sees this as an opportunity to improve Newburgh's urban landscape, making it more accessible and environmentally friendly.

Monteverde's proposal comes amid broader discussions about the city's governance. Recently, the Newburgh City Council decided to conduct a nationwide search for a new city manager following the resignation of Todd Venning, who served for three and a half years. Monteverde and other council members have expressed dissatisfaction with the current city manager system, citing issues like unkempt streets and lack of community engagement.

The council is considering forming an independent charter review commission to explore potential changes to the city's governance structure. Monteverde's push for bike lanes could be part of a larger effort to rethink and revitalize Newburgh's urban environment.
