LISTEN: Jay Bruce Powers Mets Past Phillies 4-3

The New York Mets defeated the Phillies tonight 4-3 at Citizens Bank Park tonight thanks to a big effort from outfielder Jay Bruce.

Bruce went 3/3 with two home runs and three RBI's, the big knock was an eighth inning 2-run blast that broke a 2-2 tie and held up for the Mets win.

Jacob deGrom did not have his best stuff early as he allowed two runs in the bottom of the first, but he would battle back to toss six innings allowing those two runs on six hits while striking out just three. The Mets bullpen would pick up the rest as Josh Smoker, Jerry Blevins, and Hansel Robles would protect the lead into the ninth inning.

In the bottom of the ninth, Addison Reed would allow a solo home run to Brock Stassi which cut the Mets lead to 4-3. Reed would settle down and eventually pick up his second save of the season.

The game was not without drama as Phillies relief pitcher Edubray Ramos threw a pitch over the head of Mets infielder Asdrubal Cabrera in what appeared to be a purpose pitch in retaliation to Cabrera's bat flip after hitting a game-winning home run of Ramos last season.

The Mets and Phillies will play game 2 of this three-game set tomorrow night at 7:05 pm; Coverage on WOR begins at 6:05 pm with Pete McCarthy & 'Mets on Deck'.
